Packaging Design

At Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a big part of the job is designing customers’ sampling experience. Educators review HMH products in the form of a Sample Pack before making a purchasing decision. Because of the sheer volume of information included in a sample pack, it’s the designer’s job to take a product’s branding, and utilize those visual elements to make the customer’s review experience clear and easy-to-follow, while also maintaining the product’s personality. While we don’t have any control over the design of the product itself, we can design the packaging and materials in such a way to aid this review process.

These are a few package design-specific pieces that I worked on for Sample Packs, but I also work on a myriad of brochures that are contained within these packs— examples of my brochure work can be seen in the White Papers & Brochures section of my portfolio.

LUGGAGE TAGS

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt sends a lot of sample packs of products for educators to review for a purchase and adoption decision. When there are multiple grades in the same sample pack, product-branded luggage tags are attached to parts of the box/bag to help reviewers quickly visually differentiate among the various grades. These are a few luggage tags that I’ve designed. Each set of tags utilizes the branding of the product—not the overall HMH brand.
